    Trombonist, arranger, educator

    There is a recurrent theme in the history of Kansas City jazz. And it lies within the inherent magnetism that has always drawn musicians of the highest caliber to the area.

    Trombonist, arranger and educator Steve Dekker is one of those types of musicians. Originally from Pennsylvania, Dekker began his academic career at Towson University in Maryland. His undergraduate degree is in trombone performance, and he went on to earn a Masters degree in Jazz Composition. While at Towson he studied with Stan Kenton reedman and Don Ellis arranger, Hank Levy. Dekker also holds a Ph. D. (abd) in Music Education from Penn State University, and is a former member of the 1st US Army Band at Fort Meade, Maryland.

    Dekker came to Kansas City in 1996 to be the Director of Music at Penn Valley Community College. Beginning in the fall of 2001, he will be the instrumental music instructor at Pembroke Hill High School.

    "The move to Pembroke came from a desire to focus on the preparatory stage of music education," Dekker says. "With the parental involvement and strong support system of a program like Pembroke, there is a better opportunity to get more involved in the students' musical foundation."

    Dekker is just as active musically as educationally in the Kansas City area. Since arriving in '96, he has established himself as a top-call trombonist while performing with such groups as the Trilogy Big Band, the Steve Miller Big Band, Dean Stringer's River City Jazz Orchestra, and the Boulevard Big Band. Dekker is also an accomplished arranger and has had several charts published.

    When asked what he thinks of the Kansas City jazz scene, present and future, Steve Dekker is hopeful, but with some reservations.

    "I've been here for five years and I feel there is a lot of potential for jazz in Kansas City. There are numerous opportunities to make music here and that's one of the things that attracted me to the area.

    "But the problem is that, even though Kansas City is a 'jazz town,' there seems to be some difficulty maintaining that esthetic. I recently went to see one of my favorite trombonists, Bill Watrous, in St. Louis at a venue called the Jazz Bistro. Before the performance, the proprietor actually got on the microphone and spoke about how it was inappropriate to talk during the performance and how they were there to appreciate the artists and the music. This is the same kind of respect patrons of chamber or orchestral music give to those musicians. In Kansas City, you don't often see this kind of respect for the art form. The Blue Room is a good start, but there needs to be more community interest in that venue and in affording that kind of respect for jazz."

    Dekker also says that he'd like to see the return of KC's jam session culture. "There is a need for more venues where musicians can go after their gigs to jam after hours."

    Dekker's recent projects include a new CD soon to be released by the Boulevard Big Band. Featured are such area jazz musicians as drummer Todd Strait, saxophonist Bill Caldwell, trumpeter Jay Sollenberger and Dekker on trombone, along with guest appearances by national artists Frank Mantooth (piano), Tom Harrell (trumpet) and Pete Christlieb (tenor sax).

Tom has recorded innumerable music projects, radio and TV commercials.
